Narborough Bog 09/07/2010

On Friday night I left a few traps at nearby reserve Narborough Bog. I ran 3 x 125W MV traps and 1 x 80W/100W actinic/tungsten combo trap from dusk - dawn, arriving back on site at 04:45 to collect in and empty the traps.

Despite the warm humid conditions during the day, this site is a damp woodland and peaty reedbed which seems to just sink the heat away. Overnight minimum temperature was 14°C, versus c17°C in the garden. The total catch was a little more modest than I'd expect at a more typical woodland or dry quarry site at this time of year, but included a couple of site specialities and a few good micros. Still, 1176 of 146sp is not a bad catch!

Amongst the real highlights, I picked up 7 Southern Wainscots all in the same trap right by the reedbed. Despite trapping at this site many times I have not previously recorded this species here and in fact it is the only the second record for the site - the first being back in 1991. 18 Round-winged Muslin and 9 Phoenix was notable, and yet again - another Epinotia signatana turned up!

I'll sort out some photos to follow, but here's the catch summary:
